• Description: In 1918 Akseli Gallen-Kallela fought on the frontline of the Finnish Civil War for two weeks. Afterwards he was invited by General Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim to design flags, official decorations, uniforms and more for the new, independent Finland. Akseli Gallen-Kallela also served as Mannerheim’s adjutant in 1919. He painted several portraits of Mannerheim, including the famous portrait commissioned in 1928 by the Union Bank of Finland where Mannerheim served as president of the board (this painting is now in the Mannerheim Museum)
